If you're interested in joining the fun on the field by learning to play polo our polo school is the place to start. The polo academy at Capitol Polo Club offers instruction and fun from beginner through advanced levels. No previous polo experience is necessary, we will teach you everything! Riding experience is advisable.
Our experienced string of polo ponies enable players to improve their riding skills as well as hitting and playing. Learning is important, and so is having fun! Our goal is to end every lesson with a smile. If interested in learning more about how you can become involved in Polo Academy, please contact our polo school manager Melanja Jones at melanja@capitolpolo.com.

Capitol Polo Academy FAQs
What do I get out of taking lessons? You will learn the different shots (offside forehand and backhand, nearside forehand and backhand, neck shot), defensive measure such as hooking and riding off your opponent, game strategy such as marking a man, knock ins and penalties, riding for polo, basic horsemanship and how to tack a horse. Every lesson typically ends with a fun, relaxed hitting session and the more advanced groups will progress to running plays and scrimmage scenarios at the end of lessons.
What is included in the lesson and what do I need to bring? Horse, tack, mallet are all included for group lessons. For private lessons and introductory lessons a helmet can be provided as well. Jeans and/ or riding breeches and a boot with a heel are mandatory. It is recommended that you invest in a personal helmet if taking more than one lesson. Waters are provided as well.
What is the difference between and intro lesson and a regular lesson? The Intro lesson is an extra half hour longer and includes a thorough evaluation of your riding and polo skills, an orientation on the progression, costs, and opportunities in polo, and after the lesson maps out a plan for future polo lessons and growth in the sport
Will the horse be tacked up? Part of the introductory lesson is learning to tack a polo horse so you will know how it is done properly and what safety issues to watch for in the future. Safety and horsemanship are cornerstones of the Capitol Polo Academy lesson program. After the introductory lesson, the horse will be brushed and wrapped in advance and you will help with portions of the tacking process under the supervision of the instructor
If I have never had riding lessons, can I learn polo? Yes you can but basic riding skills are highly recommended. You will progress a lot faster if you take riding lessons prior to polo lessons.
If I have taken some lessons before, should I continue with group or private lessons? What if I have my own horse? Can I take lessons if I am playing in the regular club practice? Lessons can tailored for any skill level and advanced skills can be taught in either a private or group setting. Lessons are available for students riding their own horse at a $50/ discount per lesson
When are lessons available? Private lessons and special group lessons can be scheduled Tuesday- Saturday with two days notice, as horses are available.
Group lessons will have standard times as follows, May 16- October 31.
Saturday 5pm (unless there is a USPA tournament or special event)
Sundays 8:30am
